- W2004328105 abstract "Drs. Mascitelli and Goldstein speculate that low vitamin D levels may partially explain the association between chronic lung diseases and type 2 diabetes that we observed in the Women's Health Study [ [1] Mascitelli L. Goldstein M.R. Chronic lung diseases, diabetes and hypovitaminosis D: is there a connection?. Diabetes Res Clin Pract. 2011; Google Scholar ]. While this hypothesis is intriguing and supported by some observational evidence [ 2 Quint J.K Wedzicha J.A. Is vitamin D deficiency important in the natural history of COPD?. Thorax. 2010; 65: 192-194 Crossref PubMed Scopus (14) Google Scholar , 3 Ginde A.A. Sutherland E.R. Vitamin D in asthma: panacea or true promise?. J Allergy Clin Immunol. 2010; 126: 59-60 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (32) Google Scholar , 4 Song Y. Manson J.E. Vitamin D, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. Curr Cardiovasc Risk Rep. 2010; 1: 40-47 Crossref Scopus (10) Google Scholar ], the biological mechanisms linking chronic lung diseases and type 2 diabetes are likely to be very complex and have not yet been fully elucidated. At present, there is lack of consistent or conclusive evidence from well-designed longitudinal studies or randomized clinical trials to establish cause-and-effect relationships between vitamin D and asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or type 2 diabetes. Notably, the U.S. Institute of Medicine (IOM) committee recently released a comprehensive report on the role of vitamin D and calcium in human health, highlighting the lack of compelling evidence for nonskeletal health benefits and the need for additional research [ [5] The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Dietary reference intakes for calcium and Vitamin D. The National Academies Press, Washington, DC2011 Google Scholar ]. Due to limited evidence, it remains uncertain whether low levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25[OH]D) are either a consequence or a cause of chronic airway inflammation or type 2 diabetes. Future research is needed to answer important questions about the interrelationship of the vitamin D endocrine system, respiratory diseases, and glucose intolerance. Importantly, future large-scale, randomized trials of vitamin D supplementation among initially healthy individuals, particularly with adequate doses and with rigorous documentation of clinical endpoints, are needed to establish directionality and support a causal role of vitamin D supplementation in the improvement of chronic lung disease (airway inflammation and lung function), glucose tolerance, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, and other chronic medical conditions. Chronic lung diseases, diabetes and hypovitaminosis D: Is there a connection? Comment on Song et al. [Diabetes Res. Clin. Pract. 90 (2010) 365–371]Diabetes Research and Clinical PracticeVol. 93Issue 1PreviewIn a large prospective study of middle-aged and older US women followed over 12 years, Song et al. [1] found that women with pre-existing asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) had higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. We suggest that vitamin D insufficiency may partially explain this association. Full-Text PDF" @default.
