- W2004328758 abstract "To the Editors: Shafinoori and colleagues state that “it is plausible that the lower frequency of influenza-like illnesses may have contributed to the lower incidence of invasive pneumococcal diseases.”1 The reverse may be also true; milder cases of influenza may be the result of less pneumococcal associated infections.2 It is generally accepted that influenza infections led to severe pneumococcal pneumonias among children, increasing hospitalizations in the youngest.3 Structural and functional disruption of the respiratory tract epithelium by viral infections facilitate Streptococcus pneumoniae opportunistic infections. Besides, these infections enhance the influenza virus replication: proteases produced by the bacterium favor the hemagglutinin cleavage, which increases the virus load.4 In the United States, the conjugate 7-valent pneumococcal vaccine is routinely applied to young children and the inactivated influenza vaccine recommendation has been recently expanded to all children between 6 and 59 months of age. Therefore the overlap of these 2 vaccine interventions does not allow one to determine their relevance for the control of both respiratory infection etiologies. The frequency of this copathogenicity is unknown, but its recognition has the utmost importance to determine the effectiveness of both vaccine interventions. This is crucial information for decision making of public health personnel from Latin American countries, to define national immunization programs.
