- W2004398425 abstract "In primitive thought-systems, including some prevalent in 19th century Continental medicine, illness was considered to be due to illicit, or at least injudicious indulgence. (Today, of course, nothing is considered illicit). Among the imaginative syndromes recognized in Germany at the time was “beer-drinker's heart,” in which cardiac enlargement and some form of heart failure occurred. With the confidence generated by ignorance, German authorities stated the mechanism to be overloading of the circulation by large volumes of liquid. Some of the patients probably had hypertension, but this was not recognized because many German physicians believed that examining patients was in some way discreditable, although the physicians might spend hours taking highly detailed and perceptive histories. Some of the patients might have had chronic cobalt intoxication, but this was not recognized as occurring with some beers." @default.
