- W2004405470 abstract "Partially formed teeth were dissected from the jaws following autopsies in cases of stillbirth and infant death where pathological examination had not shown features likely to be associated with retarded growth. Growth status of the teeth was assessed by weight determination ; comparison of weights and width of incisors did not suggest that the basis of this method, as recommended for age assessment, was inadequate because of individual variability in tooth size apart from growth status. It was found that increments in square roots of sums of weights of i I,i 2 and m I were equal from the 24th week of foetal life until birth ; smaller equal increments were noted from the beginning of the fourth month of infancy until the end of the seventh month ; less regular increments were apparent during the three months following birth, when the “neonatal growth arrest” is followed by completion of the enamel on the incisors. Data on each of these three phases were provided by groups of 15 dentitions, the total growth curve being consistent with the mean derived from data on a group of 40 dentitions representative of durations of gestation between 38 and 42 weeks. The mean difference between recorded and estimated ages was of the order of one week throughout the period studied." @default.
