The catalysts were deposited on the fibers by sputtering and experiments carried out in two different reactors. Samples were characterized by electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). Iron was completely inactive as catalyst with both<mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mtext>C</mml:mtext><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msub><mml:msub><mml:mtext>H</mml:mtext><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math>and CO for reasons discussed in the paper. The combination of Ni and<mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mtext>C</mml:mtext><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msub><mml:msub><mml:mtext>H</mml:mtext><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math>was very active for secondary CNT synthesis, without any pretreatment of the fibers.
