- W2004437933 abstract "The impact of whole-tree harvesting on the subsequent growth of second-rotation Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) and the extent to which nutrition may be limiting growth have been studied. Significantly lower (P < 0.05) mean tree heights were recorded for the first 10 years on whole-tree harvested plots compared with those which were harvested conventionally. Within the latter treatment, trees grew bettween during the first 3 years (P < 0.05) when planted directly through harvest residues compared with adjacent areas which were free from residue cover. Applications of NPK fertilizer had no significant effect upon growth of trees on conventionally harvested plots, irrespective of planting position. Nine years after planting, trees on whole-tree harvested plots (WT-0) had approximately 12 000 kg ha−1 less biomass than those from conventionally harvested plots (CON-0). There was no significant treatment effect upon the distribution of biomass between tree components. Trees planted on WT-0 plots also contained 50, 5 and 20 kg ha−1 less N, P and K, respectively, compared with those on CON-0 plots. By age 9 years, annual foliage litterfall was equivalent to 8% of standing foliage biomass and accounted for approximately 40% of annual foliage production, irrespective of first-rotation harvesting treatments. Results are explained by an initial increase in shelter and reduction in weed competition associated with residue retention on site. Later on there appeared to be increasing evidence of a nutritional benefit to tree growth, again associated with residue retention on site. In practice, however, such advantages should be assessed in terms of management costs associated with impaired establishment and subsequent survival of trees when planting through residues." @default.
