- W2004442017 abstract "Spherical rock particles (Zingg classification) increase in number downslope relative to non-spherical particles. This increase is very pronounced for spherical particles in excess of 500 mm in diameter. The downslope increase of spherical particles smaller than 500 mm in diameter can be ascribed to one or more of the following possibilities: (i) elimination of the smaller non-spherical particles by weathering; (ii) production of spherical particles by weathering of non-spherical particles; and (iii) faster creep of spherical particles because of their unstable equilibrium and relatively small contact area with bedrock and soil. The downslope increase of spherical boulders in excess of 500 mm diameter can be ascribed to the same reasons as (iii) above, and also to the considerable momentum generated once they are disturbed, which causes them to move a long distance." @default.
