- W2004451503 abstract "Free amino acids have been determined in the inner-ear perilymph and cerebrospinal fluid of the living, anesthetized guinea-pig by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. A ventrolateral surgical approach has been used to collect both perilymph from the apical turn of the cochlea and cerebrospinal fluid from the fallopian canal after removal of the facial nerve. Fourteen amino acids and 11 other primary-amine fractions have been detected in perilymph and cerebrospinal fluid. The concentrations of glycine and alanine were found to be 3 to 4 times higher in perilymph than in cerebrospinal fluid. The concentrations of all of the amino acids determined, including the presumptive neurotransmitters glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine, and taurine, were similar for the perilymph taken from noise-exposed animals compared with that from animals kept in silence, suggesting that none of these amino acids is the ‘auditory nerve-activating substance’ (a candidate for the primary, afferent auditory transmitter) detected electrophysiologically by Sewell, Norris, Tachibana & Guth (Science, N.Y. 202, 910–912, 1978)." @default.
