• W2004523376 abstract "Hatchery-reared Crassostrea gigas larvae are susceptible to attack by three strains of sucrose-fermenting Vibrio initially isolated from diseased larvae. Experimental administration of 105 cells/ml of any of these strains led to culture collapse within 48 h. Diseased larvae cease to swim normally, displaying instead abnormal swimming close to the substrate with some detachment of velar fragments, deteriorating to feeble and limited intra-shell movements followed by rapid necrosis. O. edulis larvae exhibited similar susceptibility. Production scale cultures have collapsed in the presence of lower than experimental doses of Vibrio, showing symptoms of vibriosis. Reducing levels of all Vibrio types detectable as sucrose fermenters on TCBS agar to well below 100/ml in water supplied to larvae has minimised losses attributable to vibriosis. The three pathogens proved to be closely similar to each other but distinct from any Vibrio species, although resembling V. anguillarum biovar I and particularly V. splendidus. However, they bore greatest similarity to three strains from Milford, CT, U.S.A., reported in 1965 as pathogens of bivalve larvae. The six pathogens form a taxonomic unit whose evaluation will be of importance to both taxonomy and pathology. Recent literature of larval bivalve pathology is reviewed, and vibriosis is considered in perspective relative to the less manageable problems, water quality and genetic status of brood stock, as influences on hatchery production." @default.
