- W2004544422 abstract "We assessed the effects of a functional knee brace (FKB) for anterior cruciate ligament insufficiency (ACLI). Eight male (30±7yrs) and five female (23±5 yrs) recreationally active ACLI subjects (6 ± 5 yrs post-injury) performed two incremental tests to exhaustion and four 20-min constant velocity (V) tests, two below lactate threshold (bLT) and two above LT (aLT), each with and without their FKB. At the V associated with blood lactate concentrations (HLa) of 4.0 mM and peak, bracing was associated with higher ratings of perceived exertion at the legs (RPE-L) [14.2 ± 1.6 vs 13.3 ± 2.4 and 16.9 ± 1.6 vs 15.5 ± 1.9, respectively] and knee (RPE-K) [14.2 ± 2.4 vs 13.1 ± 2.9 and 17.0 ± 2.1 vs 15.6 ± 2.5 respectively]. Bracing had no significant effect upon any physiological variables when exercising bLT (52 ± 16% VO2peak) except for increases in HLa (1.04 ± 0.39 vs 0.85 ± 0.31 mM) and ventilation (VE) (41.8 ± 4.8 vs 40.0 ± 4.2 L·min-1). During exercise aLT, HLa was higher by 23% (4.76± 1.51 vs 3.53 ± 1.12 mM), VO2 by 5% (2932 ± 196 vs 2808 ± 184 ml·min-1), and VE by 12% (90.2 ± 18.8 vs 80.7 ± 17.5 L·min-1). The brace had no effect on RPE-central or RPE-overall during either constant V exercise. Subjects rated RPE-L and RPE-K significantly higher during aLT when braced (14.1 ± 2.3 and 14.2 ± 1.9, respectively), than when not braced (13.2 ± 1.8 and 12.5 ± 1.7, respectively). Heart rate (176 ± 2 vs 173± 3 bpm) and the slow-component of VO2 (305 ± 135 vs 269± 170 ml·min-1) did not differ between the brace and no-brace aLT tests. We conclude that when ACLI individuals wear a FKB during constant V runs of 20 min duration, physiological and perceptual measures are affected." @default.
