Absorption of nitrogen dioxide increased the oxidation rate, determined as a function of gas concentration for 90μmol dm−3 bisulphite and as a function of bisulphite concentration for 80 ppm of the gas. From these plots and other data it was deduced that about 40 molecules of the gas need to be absorbed in order to produce one sulphite radical for chain initiation, 22 links being formed per minute to an average length of 330. The possible significance of these results in understanding the toxicity of the gas is discussed. With ferrous iron in the low picomolar range (0.1 ppb) the shape of the record indicated that oxidation to the ferric state was necessary before radical production could be started.
