- W2004641594 abstract "Ahlfeld and Pinder recently proposed a method for reducing the enormous computational burden associated with Monte Carlo simulations. It was suggested that the solution be evaluated at only a few select points (a knot sequence) over the parameter space of the random quantity and the solution elsewhere be obtained through interpolation. This paper addresses the issue of the choice of points in the knot sequence. The main thesis of the present work is that these points need to be chosen appropriately to maximize their utility and yield the fewest interpolation errors for the Monte Carlo procedure. An optimal choice of interpolation points should be based on the underlying probability distribution of the random variable(s). This is illustrated through an example for which analytical solutions are available. The statistical quantities of interest considered in this paper are the mean, variance, and probability densities of the state variable." @default.
