- W2004657092 abstract "The physical process of snowdrifting is described briefly. Saltation is the dominant mode of mass transport. The requirements for modelling of snowdrifting are outlined and it is shown that these cannot all be satisfied simultaneously in practice. A variety of approaches have been used to model snowdrifting and these are reviewed in the light of the requirements. In many modelling situations short saltation trajectories are essential. Short trajectories are readily attainable when modelling is carried out in water flows, using fine sand to represent the snow. This fact, and the convenience of water modelling, make this approach suitable and attractive for most situations even though the saltation process is not dynamically similar to that of real snow in air. This shortcoming is absent when high-density particles (e.g. fine sand) are used in air flows, but this approach has other shortcomings. Modelling can provide valuable design information but results must be interpreted with caution and field experience with snowdrifting is a valuable asset." @default.
