Abstract Interferometric data are used here to make a new, self-calibrated map of the 6 cm continuum emission from the H II region NGC 6344A. The new map has a dynamic range 10 times better than the original one and reveals that the source has an extended bipolar structure. The data show that the lobes of this structure are being ionized by the same star or star cluster that ionizes the core of NGC 6344A. The infrared emission from the bipolar lobes is most probably produced in situ by the ionized gas and not by reflection. The bipolar morphology is probably due to the confinement of the H II region by a flattened structure of gas and dust. The expansion of the core of the H II region may have triggered additional star formation in the confining structure.
