- W2004688064 abstract "In cases of amenorrhœa and anovulatory sterility the electroencephalogram (E.E.G.) was done before, during, and after treatment, with clomiphene. Of 85 patients treated with clomiphene, 48 (56·5%) had abnormal E.E.G.S before treatment. Reversal to normal of the E.E.G. tracings after between one and four treatment cycles was found in 26 patients (54%). Out of this group 89% ovulated and 53% became pregnant. In those cases in which the abnormal E.E.G. persisted, ovulation occurred in only 45%, and 2 became pregnant. In the group with normal E.E.G. before treatment no changes in tracings were observed during or after clomiphene therapy. Of the 37 cases in this group ovulation occurred in 46% with 7 pregnancies (19%). The high percentage of abnormal E.E.G.S in anovulation and amenorrhœa seems to indicate the presence of a hypothalamic disorder of which anovulation is but one manifestation. Under the influence of clomiphene the E.E.G. tracings returns to normal in a high number of patients, with a high percentage of ovulation and pregnancy, indicating that the clomiphene's site of action is in the hypothalamic region. The E.E.G. may be an important screening examination in the selection of cases of anovalatory sterility for clomiphene treatment." @default.
