- W2004700364 abstract "In recent years football in Finland, particularly at the level of the national team, has become increasingly popular. Indeed, it might be said that there is currently a 'boom' in the popularity of the game in Finland. The purpose of this study is threefold. Firstly, it charts the emergence of a new type of football fan in Finland. Secondly, it undertakes a case study of this new Finnish football fandom by exploring the social composition of supporters of the Finnish national team attending a high prestige World Cup qualifying match in Liverpool, England. Thirdly, it examines the culture, identity and behaviour of Finnish fans attending away fixtures. The methods adopted in the article are both quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative data was generated from the first empirical survey of the social and demographic composition of Finnish football supporters, which was conducted by Statistics Finland prior to the World Cup qualification match. The qualitative information on the nature of their fandom was gleaned from 'virtual participant observation' or 'inter(net)viewing' of Finnish football fans that participated in discussions on the internet and participant observation of Finnish fans at this match. The study is similar to previous work carried out by Giulianotti, but the key difference is that it focuses on only one qualification match as opposed to a whole tournament. The study identifies two main groups of fans: the 'real' fans and those who attended the game as part of a business trip or who travelled to the match because their occupation was football related. The data indicated that Finnish away fans are predominantly young males from urban conurbations, mainly from the Helsinki district, with a good educational background and with high levels of interest and motivation to follow sport, particularly football. As this article reveals, the match itself at Anfield was a unique experience and a kind of emotional high for Finnish fans that essentially marked a milestone or European debut for this type of Finnish supporter. Based on the evidence of this trip it seems that this culture will develop into the type of carnivalesque fandom more typically associated with the fans of international teams like Scotland, Holland and Ireland." @default.
