- W200476132 abstract "The unequal distribution of men and women across occupations is both an historical phenomenon and a reality of today's labour markets. Such occupational sex-segregation is a major factor that produces important differences in individuals' life experiences, and is deeply entrenched with other gender inequalities in the work context. Empirical work on occupational sex-segregation commonly focuses on its relationship with labour market outcomes, rather than on its root causes and sources of persistence. This chapter explores the associations between workers' personal characteristics, the characteristics of their job and establishment, and the proportion of workers in their occupation who are women. We focus on human capital and socialization theories of occupational sex-segregation and estimate panel data models using information from the British Household Panel Survey. Results suggest that both human capital and socialization theories are important in explaining occupational sex-segregation in Britain. Factors found to influence occupational feminization include education, years in continuous employment, career interruptions, housework and caring duties, gender-role attitudes, parental occupational sex-composition, sex-typicality of the first occupation, constraints on labour market activity, and number of children." @default.
