- W2004807918 abstract "This experiment examined the behavior resulting when high- and low-rate discriminative stimuli (SDs) are compounded. Five rats were trained on a multiple schedule containing variable-ratio (VR) 45 and differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate (DRL) 25-sec contingencies of food reinforcement, as well as an extinction component signaled by the simultaneous absence of VR and DRL SDs. Subsequently, after all Ss exhibited stable differential control to the VR and DRL SDs, a compounding test was administered that contained unreinforced block-randomized presentations of the VR SD, the DRL SD and the simultaneous presentation of both SDs (VR + DRL). Four of the five Ss clearly averaged to VR + DRL, emitting a total number of responses to this compound that was somewhere intermediate between the number of responses they emitted to the high-rate VR and the low-rate DRL SDs individually presented. Examination of test cumulative records, as as well as an interresponse time analysis revealed few characteristics of responding during the compound test condition that were not also observed during the individual presentation of VR and DRL test stimuli. Therefore, merely averaging responses over time presents a distorted description of the behavior emitted during the compound." @default.
