- W2004813346 abstract "1. Respiratory responses to hypoxia, described for the first time in Parastacidae, are qualitatively similar to those found in Astacidae and Cambaridae. 2. During progressive hypoxia, oxygen consumption, heart rate and scaphognathite rate were higher in the stream-dwelling Astacopsis franklinii than in the burrowing Parastacoides tasmanicus. 3. The critical oxygen tension was estimated as 30 and 40mm Hg in Parastacoides and Astacopsis, respectively. 4. Following maintained hypoxia, branchial ventilation rates decreased in both species, extraction efficiencies increased, whilst the convection requirement increased. 5. Both physiological and behavioural adaptations are considered important in enabling Parastacoides to survive the prolonged periods of hypoxia that occur within its burrows." @default.
