- W2004906101 abstract "The name ‘Edith Stein’ evokes all of the pain and promise of the complex relationship between Christianity and Judaism in the post-Holocaust world. Born and raised as a German Jew, Stein became a Christian in adulthood and was canonized as a saint in 1998 by the Roman Catholic Church. Her recent sainthood has sparked a number of new books. Unfortunately, few if any of them have had the student in mind. This book fills that gap. Sarah Borden has written a highly accessible, learned, and sane introduction to the whole shape of Stein's life and thought. The book is divided into eight chapters and begins with a helpful introduction to Stein's life and writings. Borden places Stein's phenomenological work at the forefront in a chapter on ‘Phenomenology and the Person’. This is followed by two engaging chapters on ‘Social and Political Writings’ and ‘Women and Women's Education’. The book then turns to Stein's contributions to twentieth-century Thomism in two chapters on ‘Christian Philosophy’ and ‘Metaphysics and Epistemology of the Later Work’. Stein's ‘Spiritual Writings’ come near the end, which might make them seem an afterthought, but they go to the core of why she was made a saint. The final chapter examines what is perhaps most controversial about Stein: the Christian appropriation of Jewish life and death. The final chapter, ‘Edith Stein since her Death: The Jewish-Catholic Dialogue’, is a very brief indication of how much her life invites reflection upon the traumatic loss that the Church remembers as Shoah." @default.
