- W2004928995 abstract "Introduction: The triggering receptor expressed in myeloid cells, (TREM-1) expression has been shown to be elevated in septic shock patients. Genetic factors may be important risk factors for sepsis. Objective: The present study determines whether a nonsynonymous polymorphism (A→T) -25 in the TREM-1 gene is an independent risk factor for complicated sepsis. Methods: 311 patients with ≥ 10% TBSA burn were enrolled. DNA was isolated from peripheral blood and genotyped by the pyrosequencing method. Clinical information regarding infection was collected daily. The risk for complicated sepsis associated with the TREM-1 SNP was determined by Chi-square test and logistic regression. Results: 47 patients (15%) developed complicated sepsis and 23 (21 %) died. A strong association was found between T-allele carriage at -25 in the TREM-1 gene and decreased risk of complicated sepsis (adjusted odds ratio = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.13-0.94) as well as death (adjusted odds ratio = 0.23, 95% CI = 0.03-0.86) Conclusions: These associations persisted, even after adjustment for other risk factors. The risk for complicated sepsis and death may be determined, in part, by genetic factors. Effects of this polymorphism on protein expression need to be investigated." @default.
