- W2004958609 abstract "The administration of estrogen to immature chicks results in the formation of cytoplasmic filaments ranging from 35 to 50 Å in diameter in oviduct epithelial cells. A few filaments first appear associated with patches of electron-dense material in the apical cytoplasm after 6 hours of estrogen administration. By 24 hr of treatment, large bundles of filaments lie parallel to the apical membranes of many cells. At the same time, small localized depressions occur in the epithelial surface, signaling the beginning of gland formation. Many glands are seen bulging into the stroma by 36 hr of estrogen treatment. Cytochalasin B treatment of oviducts early in gland formation results in the disappearance of such early glands. Moreover, apical filaments are no longer present. When estrogen-induced mitosis is depressed by hydroxyurea, apical filaments appear and luminal invaginations of the epithelium occur as in the controls. Despite this normality of initial gland morphogenesis, development then stops and outgrowth into the stroma does not take place. Cell division is probably necessary for that process." @default.
