- W2005014726 abstract "Abstract Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), because of their unique morphology and physico‐chemical properties, have many potential advantages in nanotechnology, electronics, optics and other fields of material science. Their use is limited by their sensibility to oxidation, especially at high temperatures. The chemical resistance of MWCNTs could be increased by coating with non‐oxides, e.g. boron nitride (BN) layers. The aim of the present work was to study the formation of BN thin films on MWCNTs by thermal treatment. Thin films of BN were deposited on MWCNTs surfaces by dip coating of boric acid solutions and high temperature nitriding in ammonia flow. Surface composition and chemical states of the layers were determined by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The surface layer thickness was also calculated based on XPS data, applying the Layers‐on‐Cylinder model of the XPS MultiQuant program. Resistance of the coated MWCNTs against high temperature oxidation was tested by thermogravimetric analysis. The morphology was investigated by transmission electron microscopy.
