- W2005031662 abstract "Feynman's path integral formulation of Statistical Mechanics is used to study the thermal equilibrium properties of quantum systems. A discretization of the path integral leads to a representation of a quantum particle in a potential V in terms of a classical ring polymer whose beads interact harmonically with each other and are immersed in the potential field V, a system that can be simulated by Monte Carlo methods. However, the large number of particles needed for an accurate representation of the quantum system requires optimized sampling schemes to be computationally feasible. Here we report on a new sampling scheme that mixes staging with a conventional Metropolis sampling. The results presented indicate that the present sampling scheme is efficient and generally applicable to path integral calculations of both smooth and hard-core potentials." @default.
