- W2005108803 abstract "Abstract Recent theories have thrown a new light on the origin of the sequence of fractions observed in the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). These gaps, existing in the excitation spectrum of a two-dimensional electron system in the extreme magnetic quantum limit, can be regarded as arising from Landau quantization of strange new particles. They are termed composite fermions and consist of electrons with an even number of magnetic flux quanta attached. Most surprisingly, at exactly evendenominator filling-factor, such as v = 1 2 , these particles form a fermi liquid with a well defined fermi wavevector. There exist now several pieces of experimental evidence which support this new view of the FQHE and the existence of such strange new objects." @default.
