- W2005116177 abstract "Brook stickleback, Culaea inconstans, (Kirtland) occurred in vegetated stream margins. In this environment they fed primarily between 1200 and 2000, consuming the greatest amount of food from May to August. They ate crustaceans, annelids, arachnids, insect larvae, and fish eggs and larvae. A comparison of items in the stomachs with those in the environment showed that they selected certain taxa: chironomid larvae, Sididae, and Bosminidae, and particular size classes within taxa. Fish in their 1st year selected smaller food items than older fish, and both age groups consumed prey smaller than they were morphologically capable of handling. Their foraging behavior consisted of five phases: swim, hover, aim, dart, and handle with the decision to accept or reject an item occurring in the hover or aim phase. The sequence of feeding phases was variable and some phases were omitted in a given sequence. This flexibility could allow sticklebacks to modify their feeding behavior, minimizing time and energy expenditure when feeding on food whose distribution and abundance in time and space is unpredictable. These findings are consistent with optimal foraging theories." @default.
