- W2005123917 abstract "Abstract Patterns of myelination of teleost oculomotor nuclei, electromotor nuclei and spinal cord were studied by electron microscopy. Synapses are often established at nodes of Ranvier in the oculomotor nucleus of the spiny ☐fish Chilomyceterus and in electromotor nuclei of the gymnotids Sternopygus and Steatogenys . Close membrane appositions are present at a proportion of synapses. Bulbous protrusions often increase nodal surface area, and in some axons, myelinated segments are separated by unmyelinated regions which extend for 10 or more μm along the asix of the fiber. Internode distances are frequently less than 20 μm and can be as short as 5μm. Nodal surface area for these preterminal fibers can thus approach or exceed myelinated surface area. In the spinal cord at the eel Electrophorus electricus , nodes are often spaced at intervals of less than 20 μm. Myelinated fibers in each of the areas described can have diameters considerrably smaller than 1 μm. These findings demonstrate that there are fibers in the central nervous system which differ markedly, in their pattern of myelination, from peripheral nerve fibers. The results are discussed in terms of conduction in central myelinated fibers, and it is suggested that variations in internode distance may modulate conduction velocities so as to be a factor in spatiotemporal patterning of central nervous impulses." @default.
