- W2005155216 abstract "Intact soil with turf cores were collected from 3 upland grassland sites on similar parent materials but subject to different management practices: unimproved, limed 20 yr ago and limed-fertilized (5 and 10yr previously). After transport from the field plots to an outdoor site near the laboratory, samples were left for several months for conditions to stabilize before 0, 2 or 5 earthworms were added to the cores. Subsequently, leachates were collected every 6 weeks and NO−3-N and NH+4-N concentrations measured. Plant growth was estimated by cutting and weighing material above the ground. Nitrate concentrations (0.2–4.5 μg ml) showed no significant differences in leachates from limed and limed-fertilized plots but enhanced grass growth in the presence of worms suggested improved nutrient availability in these treatments. Conversely, worms increased NO−3 losses from samples from the unimproved plots but there was no response in grass growth to increased N availability suggesting other soil conditions were limiting plant production. There were few significant differences in NH+4-N concentrations (0.2–4.0 μg ml−1) in leachates from the 3 sites with or without worms. After a period in December when the cores froze and then thawed the NH+4 losses increased from the limed cores, but not limed-fertilized cores, whereas NO−3-N losses increased from samples from both sites. Substrate availability appears to limit nitrifier populations on the field sites and hence there is little response to a short-duration pulse of NH+4 in these experiments." @default.
