- W2005187625 abstract "Odland, Berthelson, Sharma, Martin, and Mittenberg (2013 Odland, A. P., Berthelson, L., Sharma, V., Martin, P., & Mittenberg, W. (2013, February). Rates of elevated scores on the MMPI-2-RF in the normal population. Poster session presented at the meeting of the International Neuropsychological Society, Waikoloa, Hawaii. [Google Scholar]) caution that clinically elevated scale scores produced by members of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF; Ben-Porath & Tellegen, 2008 Ben-Porath, Y. S., & Tellegen, A. (2008/2011). The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory -2 Restructured Form: Manual for administration, scoring, and interpretation. Minneapolis, MN: University of Minnesota Press. [Google Scholar]/2011) normative sample raise concerns about the potential for false positive findings of psychopathology. However, the MMPI-2-RF normative sample is intended to represent the general population of the United States, 26.2% of which met criteria for a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV (APA, 1994 American Psychiatric Association. 1994. Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 4th ed., Washington, DC: APA. [Google Scholar]) disorder in a 12-month period (Kessler, Chiu, Demler, & Walters, 2005 Kessler, R. C., Chiu, W. T., Demler, O. and Walters, E. E. 2005. Prevelence, severity, and comorbidity of 12-month DSM-IV disorders in the National Comorbidity Study Replication. Archives of General Psychiatry, 62: 617–627. [Crossref], [PubMed], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]). In the current study we compare scale elevation rates in the MMPI-2-RF normative sample to prevalence rates of mental disorders primarily drawn from the National Comorbidity Study Replication (Kessler et al., 2005 Kessler, R. C., Berglund, P., Borges, G., Nock, M. and Wang, P. S. 2005. Trends in suicide ideation, plans, gestures, and attempts in the United States, 1990–1992 to 2001–2003. JAMA: Journal of the American Medical Association, 293: 2487–2495. [Crossref], [PubMed], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]). Our objective was to evaluate MMPI-2-RF elevation rates in an epidemiological context. Results indicate that MMPI-2-RF scale elevation rates were generally consistent with epidemiological data when examined in the context of standard interpretation guidelines for the inventory. We also reiterate Ben-Porath and Tellegen’s (2008/2011) caution that MMPI-2-RF scale elevations alone are not sufficient to indicate the presence of psychiatric disorder. Rather they are best viewed as indications of the need to evaluate the individual for possible disorder(s). Implications of these results, limitations of this study, and future directions in research are discussed." @default.
