- W2005220495 abstract "In this book, Stacy E. Holden argues that the successful distribution of food during environmental crises has contributed to the stability and longevity of the Moroccan monarchy. Since 1664, Moroccan rulers have come from one family, the Alaouites, who remained nominally in power during the French protectorate from 1912–1956. Focusing in particular on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Holden demonstrates how wheat, a staple in all Moroccan diets, and meat, enjoyed primarily by the rich, have been the two principal commodities most closely tied to power and politics. During the droughts that plagued this semi-arid country on a regular basis, sultans managed food shortages by ensuring the poor had access to wheat, staving off famine and unrest. Meat also played a role in political struggles, particularly during the protectorate, when animal sacrifice and taxation were strictly regulated. Most notably, the nationalist movement, which drew many of its leaders from the country's elite, exploited French shortcomings in food policies to argue that an independent Morocco, led by an Alaouite sovereign, would be better able to provide for its people." @default.
