- W2005279380 abstract "For many animal populations, the age structure of a matrix projection model is obvious. Other populations, for example sea turtles, do not fall so neatly into this format. Among other things, the number of age groups that should be used is not clear. The issue is one of modeling. We examine the question of the effects on the dominant eigenvalue of the projection matrix. Since the dominant eigenvalue governs the intrinsic growth rate of the population, we would like to have some idea of its behavior as the dimension of the projection matrix is expanded. For several types of population projection models, including that of sea turtles, we found that expanding the dimension of the matrix in a regular manner leads to predictable behavior of the dominant eigenvalue. For such matrices, the sequence of dominant eigenvalues generated by the expansion process is monotonic increasing but convergent. Moreover, the limit of the sequence can be expressed in general as a root of a polynomial whose order is less than that of the characteristic polynomial of the expanded matrix." @default.
