- W2005292362 abstract "The Xin Xin Ming’s sweeping inclusion of what comes and goes anticipates the emerging contours of global philosophy. Not merely the mechanical consequence of economic, technological, political, and other ‘‘top down’’ processes that compress the world, global philosophy embodies the reflective intentions of those working to establish what Fred Dallmayr (following Richard Falk) has described as ‘‘‘globalization from below,’ meaning the attempt to forge or build up the global city through the interaction of cultures and peoples around the world.’’ 1 From this perspective, globalization’s promise—cosmopolitan citizenship, a more unified yet richly diverse cultural environment, an increasing appreciation for the particularity of lives—is emphasized even as globalization’s perils—increasing economic disparities and ‘‘the unchecked sway of transnational capital around the world’’—are acknowledged. 2 As we explore the possibilities of this bottom-up promise in the philosophical arena, it is helpful to turn our attention to dispositions and values that are shaping the character of the project under way. Owing in large measure to the endeavors of global early risers, what have hitherto functioned as dominant philosophical discourses are giving way to pluralities of voice and method; cultural hegemony is being challenged in more quarters; worldwide exchanges and appreciation for local integrity increasingly influence philosophical expectations; and the validity of universalist and assimilationist approaches, standing long at the heart of cross-cultural encounters, is subject to qualification. The value of difference is rising beyond even what many feminists have recognized, and elitist networks based on race, gender, or ethnicity are beginning to diminish as wide participatory access to philosophy is encouraged. Global philosophy’s promise, as it emerges steadily, lies in the ability to expand our attention, concern, philosophical fluency, and appreciation in every cultural and geographical direction. While such an approach is still nascent, there are vigorous and self-critical efforts to articulate its meaning and practice. 3" @default.
