- W2005317203 abstract "Abstract Traditionally the dynamic analysis of structures has assumed fully elastic behaviour in the determination of response to wind. This paper examines the behaviour of low-rise building elements subjected to loads that exceed their elastic resistance range and the dependence of this behaviour on the type of load-displacement relationship. Such information is vital to the assessment of structural reliability against damage and collapse. A 1:250 scale model low-rise building was tested in turbulent atmospheric boundary layer flow to derive wind load time histories for the structural elements of interest. These were combined with a numerical model designed to compute the resulting elastic and/or plastic deformations. In addition to examining the influence of the particular building element's force-displacement characteristics on the damage response, the role of the element's natural frequency in relation to the loading spectrum, the element's assumed damping and the relation between the external load level and the yield force were also investigated. Implications for design are discussed, including the effect of a change in design wind speed on damage behaviour and vice versa." @default.
