- W2005321607 abstract "Women who take multivitamins during pregnancy may reduce their children's risk of developing neuroblastoma by 30 to 40%, according to a new study (Epidemiology 2002; 13: 575–80). “Our finding, combined with previous work on reducing several birth defects with vitamin supplementation and other childhood cancers, supports the recommendation that a mother's vitamin use before and during pregnancy may benefit their baby's health,” says study author Andrew F Olshan (University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, NC, USA). Olshan and colleagues identified 538 children with neuroblastoma in 139 hospitals in the United States and Canada. Through random digit telephone dialing, they also selected 504 comparable control children without the illness. Researchers then interviewed mothers of both groups to learn about their vitamin use before, during, and after pregnancy, and other possible health and illness-related factors. The also adjusted the data for confounding factors such as education and income. Olshan adds, however, that further investigations, especially laboratory studies, still need to be done to evaluate whether vitamin usage can prevent the development and progression of neuroblastoma. The researchers also add that they could not pinpoint which vitamin or combination of vitamins were most responsible for the reduced risk, but it is generally believed that folic acid, vitamin A, and vitamin C are the most likely candidates. F Ralph Dauterive, Jr (Ochsner Clinic Foundation, Baton Rouge, LA, USA) cautions, however, that drawing conclusions from a retrospective, epidemiological study such as this one is fraught with difficulty and study bias. Olsham notes that any future epidemiological studies are unlikely to provide more precise or specific information on the association: “Because of the rarity of neuroblastoma, future studies will be challenging and are likely to be of a case-control design.” However, additional research with a reasonably large study size, good response rate, specific interview probes about vitamin use, and a carefully selected control group could provide additional useful information." @default.
