- W2005331411 abstract "1. Sphenodon punctatum has a typical reptilian excretory system. The ureters open into the cloaca and urine is stored and modified, partly in the bladder (a diverticulum to the cloaca) and partly in the cloaca, before it is voided. 2. Sphenodon is urico- and ureo-ammonotelic. Plasma urea concentrations averaged 6 mM. Net tubular secretion of urea was observed. Urea clearance exceeded glomerular filtration rate (GFR) by 24–48 per cent during the normal and waterloaded condition but was lower than GFR during dehydration. Urea was not passively or actively resorbed from the bladder. Net tubular secretion of ammonia was observed under all conditions. 3. GFR was constant (4·43 ml/kg body wt. per hr) and unchanged by the state of hydration. The resorption of water by the renal tubules was significantly decreased during waterloading compared to normal while fractional Na resorption was unchanged by waterloading (78 and 75 per cent during normal and waterloaded condition, respectively). Net tubular secretion of K was found only during dehydration. In the bladder no further water resorption takes place but Na is resorbed from the bladder, resulting in decreased osmolality of the bladder urine." @default.
