- W2005338814 abstract "To “know thyself”—to develop a self-concept—is a social and cultural process. This chapter describes differences between Japanese and North American understandings of the nature of the person and the consequences of these understandings for the structure and content of the self. For many North Americans, the self is represented as independent from other people, autonomous, bounded, and composed of a relatively stable collection of attributes, abilities, wishes, and goals that transcend social contexts and highlight the person's uniqueness. For many Japanese, the self is represented as situational, context-dependent, interdependent with others, and defined by one's relationships, group memberships, and social contexts. Social processes that contribute to the Japanese construction of an interdependent self-construal are briefly reviewed. A study that examines the effects of situational variation on the self-descriptions of Americans and Japanese is described. This study revealed that situational factors had much more influence on how Japanese college women described themselves than on how American college women described themselves, reflecting the situated, or context-sensitive nature of the Japanese self-construal. The consequences of these differences in the self for self-enhancement and self-esteem are also discussed." @default.
