- W2005339552 abstract "In a stimulating article entitled 'The Eyes accost and Sunder': Unveiling Emily Dickinson's Poetics, Lisa Harper has convincingly argued that Emily Dickinson's life [and of course her poetry] is intimately bound up with questions of seeing and being seen (21). Looking from a Lacanian perspective at Dickinson's linguistic strategies of veiling, Harper unravels the tangled relation between voice and visibility in her poetry by identifying her intensely figural language as the nexus of this relation (33). Because Dickinson challenged the cultural constructs produced by the male gaze and the gendering of roles it assigned to the members of her society, she had frequent recourse to metaphorical forms of veiling (meaning both metaphors of veils and the veil as metaphor) amounting to an intensification — and potentially, a liberation — of figural language." @default.
