The results of ureteroscopic stone removal were reviewed in 100 patients. Similar results were compared in 30 patients undergoing ureterolithotomy and 32 treated by basket manipulation. Success of ureteroscopic removal was related to the location of the calculus: 50 per cent in the proximal, 80 per cent in the mid and 99 per cent in the distal ureter. Hospital stay, costs and narcotic analgesic use were significantly less for ureteroscopic stone removal than for open surgical lithotomy. The success rate for ureteroscopic removal of distal calculi (99 per cent) was higher than for blind basketing procedures (59 per cent). Ureteroscopy should be considered the technique of choice for the removal of distal ureteral calculi. It is an acceptable alternative for treatment of calculi throughout the urinary tract. © 1988 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByFABRIZIO M, BEHARI A and BAGLEY D (2018) URETEROSCOPIC MANAGEMENT OF INTRARENAL CALCULIJournal of Urology, VOL. 159, NO. 4, (1139-1143), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1998.Elashry O, Elbahnasy A, Rao G, Nakada S and Clayman R (2018) Flexible Ureteroscopy: Washington University Experience With the 9.3F and 7.5F Flexible UreteroscopesJournal of Urology, VOL. 157, NO. 6, (2074-2080), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1997.Erhard M, Salwen J and Bagley D (2018) Ureteroscopic Removal of Mid and Proximal Ureteral CalculiJournal of Urology, VOL. 155, NO. 1, (38-42), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1996.Ehreth J, Drach G, Arnett M, Barnett R, Govan D, Lingeman J, Loening S, Newman D, Tudor J and Saada S (2018) Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy: Multicenter Study of Kidney and Upper Ureter Versus Middle and Lower Ureter TreatmentsJournal of Urology, VOL. 152, NO. 5 Part 1, (1379-1385), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1994.Wills T and Burns J (2018) Ureteroscopy: An Outpatient Procedure?Journal of Urology, VOL. 151, NO. 5, (1185-1187), Online publication date: 1-May-1994.Chang S, Ho C and Kuo H (2018) Ureteroscopic Treatment of Lower Ureteral Calculi in the Era of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy: From a Developing Country Point of ViewJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 5 Part 1, (1395-1398), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1993.Esuvaranathan K, Tan E, Tan P and Tung K (2018) Does Transurethral Laser Ureterolithotripsy Justify its Cost?Journal of Urology, VOL. 148, NO. 3 Part 2, (1091-1094), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1992.Stoller M, Wolf J, Hofmann R and Marc B (2018) Ureteroscopy without Routine Balloon Dilation: An Outcome AssessmentJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 5, (1238-1242), Online publication date: 1-May-1992.Netto N, Claro J, Lemos G and Cortado P (2018) Treatment Options for Ureteral Calculi: Endourology or Extracorporeal Shock Wave LithotripsyJournal of Urology, VOL. 146, NO. 1, (5-7), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1991.Kavoussi L, Clayman R, Mikkelsen D and Meretyk S (2018) Ureteronephroscopic Marsupialization of Obstructing Peripelvic Renal CystJournal of Urology, VOL. 146, NO. 2 Part 1, (411-414), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1991.Garvin T and Clayman R (2018) Balloon Dilation of the Distal Ureter to 24F: An Effective Method for Ureteroscopic Stone RetrievalJournal of Urology, VOL. 146, NO. 3, (742-745), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1991.Netto N, Lemos G and Claro J (2018) In Situ Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy for Ureteral CalculiJournal of Urology, VOL. 144, NO. 2 Part 1, (253-254), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1990.Berkhoff W and Meijer F (2018) Percutaneous Antegrade Fiberoptic Ureterorenoscopic Treatment of Ureteral CalculiJournal of Urology, VOL. 144, NO. 3, (628-630), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1990.Kavoussi L, Clayman R and Basler J (2018) Flexible, Actively Deflectable Fiberoptic UreteronephroscopyJournal of Urology, VOL. 142, NO. 4, (949-954), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1989.
