- W2005354426 abstract "Electrocautery allows for the dissection of tissues in the head and neck with minimal blood loss and with quicker operating time compared with the results of the scalpel. Electrocautery can potentially be a mechanism to minimize blood exposure while avoiding the use of the scalpel. This is a serious concern, particularly when treating patients with a high risk of having a blood-borne communicable disease such as hepatitis and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The greatest concerns in head and neck surgery are for major head and neck cancer procedures and maxillofacial trauma. Electrocautery is also useful in incising the cervical skin. There have been no clinical studies assessing the cosmesis of cervical skin after incision with electrocautery. This study reports the cosmetic evaluation of the cervical skin and scar after incision with electrocutting current in various head and neck procedures.
