- W2005394443 abstract "Two concerns are dealt with in this exploratory study: 1) differences in scores on selected ability and achievement measures among Hawaii public school students of diverse cultural backgrounds and 2) changes in scores on these measures over a 28-month period. Do the profiles of mean scores and the factor structure underlying the test scores reflect cultural differences? It is possible that tests may not provide the same stimuli for various ethnic groups and that any ethnic variations in perceptions could be reflected in the factor structure underlying the tests. Anastasi (1958; p. 563) has suggested that each culture or subculture fosters the development of a different pattern of abilities. Yet the evidence concerning the nature of these differences is not entirely clear; in fact, cross-cultural studies of differences in abilities, except comparisons between Caucasians and Negroes and between subcultural groups such as rural and urban children, are relatively few in number. It has been shown, for example, that the performance of Orientals may surpass that of their Caucasian classmates on certain measures of ability (Darsie, 1926; Porteus, 1939; Smith, 1942). Recently Lesser, Fifer and Clark (1964) demonstrated the relationship of cultural and socio-economic factors to the measured ability of children from several different cultural groups, but Hilton (1964), reporting on the first phase of the Study of Academic Predictions and Growth, has questioned whether socio-economic measures add much to the effectiveness of ability measures as predictors of academic performance once students have been exposed to the high school experience. To our knowledge, no one has compared different cultural groups on ability and achievement scores at the beginning and end of secondary school. If cultural differences exist at the beginning of high school, do they tend to disappear as students are exposed to similar school experiences? Hawaii lends itself well to such a study because the school population is highly stable, is reasonably typical of other American states" @default.
