- W2005470116 abstract "The effect of enzymatic digestion on the staining of synapses with the bismuth iodide technique (BIUL) has been investigated. Trypsin, chymotrypsin, and peptidases had only little effect on BIUL-positive material of the synapse, whereas they prevented uranyl and lead staining of the membrane complexes. Pronase and pepsin completely degraded the synaptic membrane complexes. This result allows to differentiate a trypsin-resistant, mainly basic moiety from a trypsin-labile, mainly acidic component of the synaptic densities. The dissociation of synaptic contacts has successfully been performed in solutions of high ionic strength. The involvement of basic groups was demonstrated by the powerful action of sodium perchlorate. This result supports the hypothesis of polyionic binding as the mechanism of connectivity between preand postsynaptic membranes. It explains further the unstained narrow gap between the intracleft lines in BIUL-treated synapses." @default.
