A prospective study was performed in 141 patients with suspected complicated renal colic to compare the sensitivity of ultrasonography (US) and plain abdominal radiography (kidney, ureter, bladder, {KUB}) with intravenous urography. US alone was a sensitive method (98 p. 100) for diagnostic ureteral obstruction. Ureteral calculi were correctly localized by US and KUB in 85 p. 100 of patients. Our study shows that Us combined with KUB is an excellent screening method in patients with renal colic. IUV should be performed only in patients in whom the diagnosis remains uncertain (due mainly to a non obstructing stone) or in whom an invasive treatment is planned." @default.
