- W2005496906 abstract "Backround: Previous studies have demonstrated that overweight/obesity has become prevalent in college students due to decreasing participation in physical activity. Although most universities provide facilities and programs that promote physical activity and fitness, it is often difficult to identify students that have low levels of health-related fitness and could thus benefit from these programs. Hence, there is a need for a simple assessment that estimates overall health-related fitness and identifies these low physically active students. The purpose of this project was to examine which health-related fitness component was the best indicator of overall fitness in college students. Methods: Sixty-nine subjects (28 male, 41 female, aged 21 ± 3.5 yrs.) from two major universities volunteered to perform basic fitness assessments to measure body composition (BC), cardiorespiratory endurance (CE), flexibility (FL) and muscular endurance. The assessment included three-site skinfold (males: chest, abdomen, thigh; females: triceps, suprailiac, thigh), YMCA cycle ergometer test, sit and reach for flexibility, push-ups to failure (PU) and 60 second curl-ups (CU), respectively. All assessments followed the ACSM's (1995) Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription. Pearson correlation coefficents were used to determine the association between fitness tests. Conclusion: Based on these results, body composition assessed by three-site skinfold measurements had the strongest correlation to each of the other components of fitness. It is known that individuals who exhibit a high percentage of body fat are more likely to be overweight or obese. However, based on this data, the three-site skinfold measures may be used as an accurate field measure on college campuses to identify students who may possess low health-related fitness levels.Table" @default.
