- W2005657787 abstract "Left ventricular (LV) geometry has been classified into 4 categories based on whether LV mass is normal or increased and whether LV relative wall thickness (RWT, the ratio of wall thickness to chamber diameter) is normal or increased. The resulting 4 geometric patterns (Figure 1) are termed: normal, concentric remodeling (normal LV mass with increased RWT), eccentric hypertrophy (increased LV mass with normal RWT), and concentric hypertrophy (increased LV mass and increased RWT). In the present issue of the American Heart Journal, Fox et al describe the spectrum of echocardiographic LV geometric patterns from the Jackson cohort of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study. There are 3 notable findings, each worthy of discussion. First, in this cohort of middle-aged African Americans, concentric remodeling and concentric hypertrophy were extremely common (36% and 29% of the cohort, respectively), more so than either eccentric hypertrophy (11%) or a normal pattern (24%). Second, concentric remodeling was not related to either systolic or diastolic dysfunction, data questioning the importance of this phenotype. Third, the type of LV hypertrophy was associated with the type of ventricular dysfunction. Specifically, eccentric hypertrophy was associated with reduced systolic function as measured by reduced LV ejection fraction, whereas concentric hypertrophy was associated with diastolic dysfunction as measured by transmitral inflow." @default.
