- W2005679264 abstract "Abstract The spatial pattern or distribution of a population (of plant, animals, etc.) dispersed over a continuous surface may be studied through the observed frequency distribution for counts of individuals in randomly sampled quadrats. A number of measures of aggregation for the purpose of describing spatial patterns based on such counts have been proposed by various authors. Another approach is to use indices based on the spacing of the individuals. This type of index could be calculated from either nearest neighbor distances or “point to plant” distances. The theory of clustering processes and doubly stochastic processes is considered, along with examples, and the dependence on quadrat size is explicitly shown for the measures of aggregation based on sample quadrat counts. Two indices of contagion are proposed, one based on the “point to plant” distance in relation to the correspondingdistance for a random distribution of individuals, and one based on the nearest neighbor distance similarly relativized. The behavior of these indices is examined, and comparison is made with a theoretical index derived from the definition of contagion." @default.
