- W2005682302 abstract "Shakedown effects, due to final-state screening of a core level by a (localized) $4f$ electron, have frequently been reported in x-ray photoemission spectroscopy core-level spectra of metallic systems based on the lighter rare-earth elements. Such effects appear to correlate with the hybridization between the $4f$ electrons and the conduction electrons, which decreases monotonically with increasing $Z$ in the rare-earth series because of the lanthanide contraction of the $4f$ subshell. This picture has been clouded by the recent report of a large shakedown satellite in the $3d$ emission from Eu${mathrm{Pd}}_{3}$, such an effect being absent in Sm${mathrm{Pd}}_{3}$ and negligibily small in Nd${mathrm{Pd}}_{3}$. We have observed a similar effect in Sm${mathrm{Al}}_{2}$, where the required hybridization is expected to be small, and argue that in both cases the anomalous satellite is the emission from a divalent surface layer rather than a shakedown effect in the trivalent bulk." @default.
