- W2005710036 abstract "This issue of OPO is fronted by an invited paper from Alicja Rudnicka and Christopher Owen that describes the use of systematic reviews and meta-analyses in health care. The findings of individual research studies are rarely sufficient on their own to justify certain treatments and systematic reviews identify, evaluate, combine and summarise the findings of all relevant individual studies and attempt to provide the best possible evidence about the effects of treatments and other interventions used in health care. Metaanalyses attempt to appropriately combine the data from several studies and calculate a weighted average result. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are thought to provide the gold standard level of evidence and are predominantly used to inform National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines. Systematic reviews have appeared rarely in the optometric literature, although some are starting to appear in the Cochrane database (http://www.thecochranelibrary.com), which is the largest source of systematic reviews and named after Archie Cochrane (1909‐1988), a Scottish physician and epidemiologist who is generally attributed with starting the evidence-based approach to health care. A PubMed March 3rd 2012 search of the three ISI-listed optometric journals, Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics, Optometry & Vision Science and Clinical & Experimental Optometry for ‘systematic reviews’ published in the last 10 years identified only four such manuscripts. 1‐4 Although recent reviews of optometric treatments for myopia have been published, 5 a search of PubMed using the keywords ‘systematic review’ and ‘myopia’ found no systematic review of the optometric treatment of myopia. The search did identify several systematic reviews regarding the medical treatment of myopia by Lasik, PRK, excimer laser and intra-ocular lenses and even a systematic review of whether myopia is a risk factor for open angle glaucoma. A search of the Cochrane database identified one recently published systematic review that summarised optometric interventions to slow the progress of myopia, including bifocal spectacles, cycloplegic drops, intraocular pressure-lowering drugs, muscarinic receptor antagonists and contact lenses. 6 It seems pertinent to point out that the publication of this paper was preceded by 2 months by a systematic review of the rather sparse and relatively poor quality literature assessing the usefulness of acupuncture to slow myopia progression. 7 Systematic reviews of other optometric interventions are also relatively rare: three systematic reviews of the usefulness of eye exercises have highlighted the evidence for the efficacy of vision therapy for convergence insufficiency, 8‐10 particularly on an out-patient basis. 10 One of" @default.
