- W2005804914 abstract "ABSTRACT The use of segmented mirrors for the primary elements of large telescope systems is becoming increasingly popularowing to the cost effectiveness of the design. Likewise, the use of non-optical flat glass in large collectors can furtherreduce cost. Unfortunately, both non-optical flatness and segment misalignment do result in phase errors. We haveused a computer simulation to study the effects of these phase errors on the polarization state of an optical beam.We report herein on the effects of surface warping and of segment piston and tilt on the Stokes parameters of anoptical beam reflected from a segmented mirror. Keywords: Polarization, non-optically flat glass, alignment, optical systems, flat mirrors 1. INTRODUCTION Optical methods of sensing remote objects, such as spacecraft from a ground site, have been studied extensively bythe Air Force for several decades. Recent efforts have investigated exploiting the polarization properties of reflectedlight for identifying and characterizing space objects.'3 Future optical imaging and sensing systems may employlarge collector arrays of mirrors,4 so it is of interest to investigate the kinds of polarization measurement errors thatcan arise with these systems. In this paper we investigate effects due to piston, tilt, and surface warping errors onindividual elements of a simple segmented receiver system." @default.
