- W2006004982 abstract "‘The strategic leadership of complex practice: Opportunities and challenges’ by Tony Morrison is based on the Founder's Lecture that Tony gave at the BASPCAN Congress in Swansea on 14 September 2009. Tragically, Tony died in an accident in February 2010, having already submitted this paper to Child Abuse Review. ‘The issue of professional stress is fundamental and as crucial to effective child protection as the absence of delirium tremens to a successful brain surgeon. Professionals operating from a position of chronic stress are highly susceptible to errors of omission—not taking all possible actions to ensure the safety of a child at a crucial moment.’ (Dale et al., 1986, p. 33) What was so characteristic of Tony's work was that he did not leave professionals confronted with a problem without trying to find a manageable solution. Thus, Dangerous Families included a model for assessing and intervening when there were concerns about child abuse. The desire to both recognise and address the challenges that those working with child maltreatment encounter led Tony to leave the NSPCC and establish himself as a very successful independent trainer and consultant. In October 2009, he celebrated, together with the many trainers who had commissioned and worked with him, what he described as ‘twenty years on the road’. In that time, he continued to explore and attempt to address the challenges that practitioners and managers encounter. Of particular note and indeed what he himself identified as crucial in this issue of Child Abuse Review is the work he undertook with: ‘often poorly supported front-line supervisors and managers’, members of ‘strategic partnerships [who need to] gain the level of understanding required about the context and complexities of practice to be in a position to lead its improvement’ and front-line staff who require ‘practice knowledge’ (Morrison, 2010, p. 326). ‘Play[s] a key role within organisations in promoting shared standards solving organisational problems' and supporting and sustaining staff’ (Morrison, 2010, p. 325). His commitment to assisting front-line practitioners obtain the ‘practice knowledge’ described above was enhanced by his understanding of the challenges they encountered. These are vividly described in articles such as ‘The emotional effects of child protection work on workers’ (Morrison, 1990) and ‘Emotional intelligence, emotion and social work: Context, characteristics, complications and contribution’ (Morrison, 2007). His writing and development work with front-line practitioners extended to those working in the field of sex offending (Masson and Morrison, 2006; Morrison et al., 1994). For a number of years, he retained a practice base at G-MAP in Manchester where he ran programmes for parents of young people who commit sexual assaults. Very early on in his career, Tony recognised that effective front-line practice can only occur if senior managers adopt the appropriate leadership role and, to this end, much of his development work was to support these managers and develop their knowledge and skills. His work, originally with Area Child Protection Committees and, since 2006, Local Safeguarding Children Boards (LSCBs), provided opportunities for members of these multidisciplinary strategic partnerships to ‘deploy strategies that engage organisations in collective reflection and organisational learning’. His publications (see, for example, Horwath and Morrison, 2007; Morrison, 1996, 1998; Morrison et al., 2005) provide some insight into this work. His most recent contribution − a self-assessment and improvement tool for Welsh LSCBs − which we worked on together is described in his paper. Tony believed that if those working in the field are to obtain ‘practice knowledge’ and have opportunities to reflect on their practice, then trainers require the necessary knowledge and skills to support them in this process. Just as he sought to identify and address the challenges encountered by practitioners and managers, so he did the same for trainers through writing (Horwath and Morrison, 1999; McFarlane and Morrison, 1994; Morrison, 1997) and running courses to train trainers in promoting effective practice in relation to supervision and key practice issues such as attachment and multidisciplinary working. Perhaps the best tribute to Tony's work is summarised by a comment made by a practitioner on leaving the hall after Tony's recent BASPCAN address. She turned to me and said that she had been thinking seriously about leaving social work but that Tony's talk had invigorated her and she felt she was going to give it another go because he had reminded her what was important and what was achievable." @default.
