- W2006008382 abstract "Abstract Pollen grains of the Styphelieae are in permanent tetrads but regular, early abortion of three grains creates a functional monad. The functional monad is the basic pollen type in the Styphelieae, but changes of ploidy level in some species have disrupted the cytoplasmic control of abortion leading to the production of functional dyads, triads, and also fully fertile tetrads. Individual grains adhere by fusion of tecta and footlayers of the proximal walls, and there is a continuous ektexine layer surrounding the whole tetrad. The distal walls of aborted grains lack in tine and have only a small amount of endexine, but are otherwise normal. However, proximal walls of aborted grains lack any recognisable exine stratification and consist primarily of endexinous lamellae. The development of the unusual functional monad type of pollen in the Styphelieae may be related to fruit type. The change from the many-seeded fruit characteristic of most members of the Ericales to the few-seeded fruit of the Styphelieae may have made fully fertile tetrad pollen redundant, and thus permitted the development of monad pollen." @default.
